The Public Works Department is responsible for many county activities, such as:
  • Road Maintenance contruction and repair
  • Building maintenance
  • Grounds maintenance
  • Housekeeping services
  • Animal control
  • Employing the County Fire Department Coordinator, who also serves as the assistant EMA director

We are one of the largest county departments and currently employ 26 people.

The Road Department is actually our largest department, and these folks are the ones who repair the potholes, scrape the dirt roads, cut the grass, solve drainage issues and keep up with all the roads to insure that the public has safe roads to travel upon. The Road Department also erects signs and removes foreign objects, such as trees and other obstructions from the roads. In a nutshell, they are the ones who take care of the roads and the right of ways.

The Building Maintenance Department does repairs to our buildings and maintenance tasks such as changing air filters and light bulbs. These folks also take care of major construction and repairs, such as exterior painting and roof repair. They also keep the HVAC systems working properly and also monitor the fire suppression systems. Their responsibilities are many and varied. Suffice it to say that this department is rarely not engaged in one project or another.

The Animal Control Department is the newest member of the Public Works team. Our animal control officers are in charge of all issues concerning domesticated non-farm animals in the county. This department picks up stray animals, helps with issues concerning mistreatment of animals, and deals with potentially rabid animals. The county has recently opened up a new animal control shelter located on C. Weldon Smith Drive.

The Housekeeping Department is made up of folks who insure that the floors in our buildings are clean and that the trash is removed and that the offices are cleaned. They also wax and buff all the floors and take care of all things related to housekeeping. They are rarely seen but their work is certainly seen every day.

The County Fire Coordinator is responsible for keeping records on a countywide basis for all of our fire departments and also helps with training and other support issues. This person also helps all the local fire departments to coordinate their efforts and to work together to provide fire safety to all the residents of Greene County. This same person also handles communications issues with respect to the E-911 center and works with the Police and EMS and the 911 departments to insure that our communications are functioning properly. Another unsung hero, he is rarely seen but is always there.
