County Seeking Applicants for Board Positions

Planning and Zoning Board and Tax Assessors Board

Published Tuesday, June 11, 2019

The Greene County Board of Commissioners is seeking applicants for both the Board of Tax Assessors and the Planning and Zoning Board. Members of both Boards have staggered terms, with one position on the Board of Tax Assessors having a term that expires on May 31, 2019, and two positions on the Planning and Zoning Board with terms expiring on June 1, 2019.

The Board of Tax Assessors operates autonomously under state law as the agency responsible for determining taxability and establishing the fair market value of all real and personal property for taxation purposes. The Board is also responsible for notifying taxpayers when there are changes to the fair market value of their property. In addition, the Board receives, reviews and insures the proper processing of all appeals, reviews all applications for exemptions, and approves or denies the applications and maintains all mapping.  They are not responsible for collecting taxes.  They meet on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 5:15 PM in the Lower Level Conference Room at 1034 Silver Drive in Greensboro. The term is for three years.  Members are required to successfully complete at least 40 hours of approved appraisal courses within 180 days of appointment and an additional 40 hours of training during each two calendar years of tenure.

The Planning and Zoning Commission evaluates and conducts public hearings on rezoning and variance requests.  They do not make planning and zoning decisions but serve to make recommendations to the Board of Commissioners, which is the ultimate decision maker on these issues.  The Planning and Zoning Commission meets the last Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m. in the Upper Level Conference Room at 1034 Silver Drive in Greensboro, unless otherwise posted.  This position is a three-year term.

To be eligible to serve on a Board in Greene County you must reside in Greene County and maintain your residency during your term, you must not owe any delinquent taxes or fees to Greene County, you cannot serve on more than two appointed boards or authorities, and you must completely, properly and accurately complete a Candidate Questionnaire.  Applicants ideally would have some relevant background, involvement or education in the respective board, be competent and of sound mind, be truly interested in the welfare of Greene County and its residents, sensitive to the long-term, as well as, immediate impact of their decisions, and be willing to devote the time and energy necessary to fulfill their responsibilities.

If you would like to be considered for one of these openings, complete a Candidate Questionnaire.
