RESULTS OF DECEMBER 6, 2021 HAND – COUNT OF ALL BALLOTS FOR GREENSBORO CITY COUNCIL ELECTION

On election night, November 2, 2021, the Unofficial and Incomplete Election Summary results reflected a tie between two candidates, Chris Moore and Jontavius Smith, for the 5th Greensboro City Council seat.

When a cure affidavit was lawfully and timely received for one Provisional Ballot, that ballot contained a vote for Chris Moore, but not for Jontavius Smith. Consequently, the election results were certified to reflect that the tie had been broken and that Chris Moore had won the seat by one vote.

Subsequently, a recount was requested by Jontavius Smith and was conducted by machine, as required by law, which verified the certified results and Mr. Moore’s win.

On Monday, December 6, 2021 at 8:30 AM, the Greene County Board of Elections and Registration conducted a court-ordered hand count of all ballots cast for Jontavius Smith and Chris Moore in the Greensboro City Council election of November 2, 2021.

Both Mr. Smith and Mr. Moore were present for the hand count along with several observers from the community and an investigator from the Secretary of State’s office.

The final results of the hand count further verified the November 2nd election results as certified by the Election Board November 8th in which Mr. Moore won the council seat by one vote.

We have now had certified election results:

  • tabulated by machine;
  • a recount tabulated by machine;
  • and a final manual hand count that all resulted in the exact same findings.

Chris Moore was successful in winning the 5th seat of the Greensboro City Council.
