Why Priority Dispatch Matters in Real Life

Here’s a real-world example of why Greene County E-911’s transition to Priority Dispatch matters:

In the past, if an ambulance was responding to a non-emergency call — for example, an earache — and a second call came in for someone actively having a heart attack nearby, we could not simply divert that ambulance to the more serious emergency once it was assigned. Even if the heart attack was clearly more critical, the response was locked in based on how the original call was classified.

With Priority Dispatch, that changes.

Because calls are now classified using a nationally recognized medical priority system, emergencies are assigned a level based on severity from the very beginning. That allows us to:

✔ Clearly identify life-threatening emergencies
✔ Prioritize the most critical calls
✔ Reassign or redirect resources when necessary
✔ Ensure the closest and most appropriate help goes to the most urgent situation

This system gives us greater flexibility to respond to true emergencies while still providing appropriate care for non-life-threatening calls.
